The 23-mile stretch of U.S. 52 between I-40 in Winston-Salem and I-85 in Lexington has received the green-light to upgrade to interstate status and will be designated Interstate 285. The NC Department of Transportation requested to upgrade the highway to interstate status in September 2017; new interstate signs will be installed later this year.
